Entire coast is open to mussel harvesting

State officials have re-opened entire Oregon Coast to recreational mussel harvesting.

Shellfish samples taken last week indicate levels of paralytic shellfish toxins have dropped below the alert level, a press release said. The South Coast from Bastendorff Beach to the California border had been closed to recreational harvesting of mussels since October.

Razor clamming along the entire coast remains open.

Coastal scallops are not affected by paralytic shellfish toxins when only the adductor muscle is eaten. The consumption of whole recreationally harvested scallops is not recommended.

ODA will continue to routinely test for shellfish toxins.

For more information, call ODA’s shellfish safety information hotline at (800) 448-2474, the Food Safety Division at (503) 986-4720 or visit the ODA shellfish closures Web page at http://oregon.gov/ODA/FSD/shellfish_status.shtml.
