Recreation Report
Siuslaw River: Mid to upper tidewater is producing the best fall Chinook catch rates around high tide.
Arizona Pond: Trout fishing is poor. Water levels have been reduced to control vegetation.
Chetco River: The ocean Chinook bubble fishery is closed. Chinook fishing in the estuary has been fair.
Coos County lakes: Rainbow trout have been stocked in Empire Lakes, Saunders Lake and Powers Pond. Powers Pond will be extremely difficult to fish due to heavy aquatic vegetation.
Coos River Basin: The best catches of Chinook are coming from upstream of the Chandler Bridge and into the South Coos River. Trolling cut plug herring or sardines have produced the most fish along with trolling spinners. Casting spinners or fishing bait under a bobber are the most effective ways from shore.
The next good clam digging tides will be in a couple of weeks.
Crabbing continues to be excellent from boats. The docks in Charleston Boat Basin and at the Empire Boat Ramp are producing lots of crabs.
Coquille River Basin: The Coquille River is closed to harvest of wild coho. Trolling cut plug herring or sardines have been the best baits for Chinook in the lower river while trolling spinners are working in the upper river.
Crabbing for Dungeness off the Bandon docks and from boats in the lower Coquille remains good.
Diamond Lake: Fishing has improved with the cooler temperatures. Bank anglers have been very successful recently.
Elk and Sixes rivers: Chinook should start entering both rivers once there is enough rain.
Garrison Lake: The ODFW stocked 200 1-pound trout last week. Fishing conditions are still a little tough, but anglers with boats have been doing well.
Loon Lake: Bass and bluegill fishing has also been good recently.
Rogue River, lower: Anglers are catching a mix of coho and Chinook in the bay. Most fish are being picked up on anchovies or anchovy with a spinner blade in front.
Tenmile Basin: A blue green algae health advisory has been issued for Tenmile Lakes. The Department of Human Services advisory states that precautions should be taken to avoid water contact for people and pets. People who choose to eat fish from waters where algae blooms are present should remove all fat, skin and organs before cooking, since toxins are more likely to collect in these tissues.
The wild coho season has opened in Tenmile Lakes. There have been no reports of coho yet, but they should start entering the lakes once the water levels come up.
Umpqua River Mainstem: Anglers at Cleveland Rapids and River Forks have been successful fishing for fall Chinook. Bass fishing is slowing down as the temperatures drop.
SW Zone hunting: Open seasons include: Cascade elk (Oct. 16-22), turkey (opened Friday), cougar, bear, valley and mountain quail, forest and blue grouse and pheasant. Western Oregon Cascade rifle deer is closed during elk season.
