Oregon Tuna Classic wraps up

Posted by Webmaster on Sep 8, 2010 in Fishing

The Oregon Tuna Classic finished up last weekend in Garibaldi, and local team Green Lightning Laundry didn’t fare well enough to take home the top prize – an invitation to the International Game Fish Association’s Offshore World Championship.

But 48 teams brought back 6,414 pounds of tuna to donate to Tillamook County food banks.

Top anglers in Garibaldi were: first place finisher Albie Damned with 139.3 pounds; second place, Fat Cat with 134.5 pounds; and third place, Defiance/CornFed with 129.8 pounds.

Albie Damned donated its first-place prize of $3,000 back to the Oregon Tuna Classic.

Just Keep Fishing, which had a small overall lead over Green Lightning Laundry, held on for the win despite not landing on the podium last weekend. The local team took home second place overall after a tough weekend of fishing.

Just Keep Fishing received the berth to the IGFA Offshore World Championship next May, since the tournament is now an IGFA qualifier.

Five tuna caught by one of the teams in the Oregon Tuna Classic are ready to be weighed Saturday afternoon on the dock at The Mill Casino-Hotel. The teams fished off the coast from the Charleston Marina.

The Oregon Tuna Classic reeled in thousands of pounds of tuna last weekend, producing happy fishermen along with happy food banks.

Thirty-seven teams caught 4,045 pounds of tuna last Saturday during the third leg of the tournament in Charleston, and food banks along the South Coast can also expect an additional 2,100 pounds of fish that were donated.

With great crowds and decent weather to greet the fishermen, Charleston Port Manager Jim Pex thought the tournament went well.

“Outstanding, actually. It was a pretty booming event,” he said. “There were people all up and down the boat basin.

Waves may quell part of tuna event

While it’ll still be a good time raising money for a good cause, the Oregon Tuna Classic might not reel in much tuna this year.

Charleston will host the food bank fishing fundraiser for the second year in a row this Saturday, but organizers fear heavy seas might not permit the actual fishing part.

“It’s a lot of fun, and we get to help out a good cause,” Port Captain Jim Pex said. “A lot of families come, so it’s a pretty good crowd.”
