Local lakes: Forty-three boats converged on Tenmile Lakes last weekend for the Frostbite Bass Tournament sponsored by the Emerald Bass Club. The big bass of the event weighed in at 5.81 pounds and the winning five-fish total weight was 22 pounds, 4 ounces. Anglers reported catching the majority of the largemouth bass on grubs, jigs and brush hogs.
It’s time to dust off your trout gear because next week will be the first round of trout stocking by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife for 2011. Bradley Lake, Empire Lakes, Johnson Mill Pond, Powers Pond and Saunders Lake are all scheduled to receive 3,000 legal-size trophy trout. Families with kids under 14 are more than welcome to stop by Port O’ Call in Old Town Bandon for a free rod, reel and line courtesy of the Kids Fish Free program.

Fishing
The special wild coho salmon fishery in Siltcoos and Tahkenitch lakes has been good this past week.
Slow trolling hot shots, wiggle warts or spinners seems to be the preferred method. Both of these lakes have an average depth of about 10 feet, so you won’t need any weight. Simply letting your line out and trying to keep your bait out of the weeds offers up the best opportunities. Both lakes have easy access off U.S. Highway 101 and well maintained boat launching facilities.

Siuslaw River: Mid to upper tidewater is producing the best fall Chinook catch rates around high tide.
Arizona Pond: Trout fishing is poor. Water levels have been reduced to control vegetation.
Chetco River: The ocean Chinook bubble fishery is closed. Chinook fishing in the estuary has been fair.
Coos County lakes: Rainbow trout have been stocked in Empire Lakes, Saunders Lake and Powers Pond. Powers Pond will be extremely difficult to fish due to heavy aquatic vegetation.
Coos River Basin: The best catches of Chinook are coming from upstream of the Chandler Bridge and into the South Coos River. Trolling cut plug herring or sardines have produced the most fish along with trolling spinners. Casting spinners or fishing bait under a bobber are the most effective ways from shore.

Fishing
Salmon fishing on all local rivers remains some of the best we’ve seen in years.
Folks who used to be happy with catching a single fish are now talking about limits. Leading the way in the number of fish caught is the Coos River. Salmon are being taken from the mouth of the river and up as far as Daniel’s Creek, with the best bites between the North Bend Bridge and Marshfield Channel.
Last week, fresh fish moved into the lower bay and trolling near the jetties produced limits

SALEM (AP) — The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will close sport fishing for chinook on the Snake River just before midnight on Aug. 4.
Biologists from Idaho and Oregon cooperatively manage the fishery.
They recommended the closure because the harvest quota of 2,000 hatchery chinook has been met.

Fishing
The opening of the ocean Chinook salmon fishery was disappointing, but it was to be expected. Most of the commercial salmon anglers were fishing far offshore and quite deep, conditions not easily duplicated by salmon sport anglers.
That said, there were a few salmon caught and one was huge. Lee Baker, fishing slightly north of the Umpqua River mouth in 300 feet of water hooked and landed a 43-inch Chinook. The fish was rather thin and only weighed 32 pounds, but salmon that length usually weigh well over 40 pounds. He was fishing 60 feet down with a plug-cut herring. It was his only bite.
The first salmon taken was by Tyler Proof on a chartered trip with Oregon Custom Charters. Only two salmon were counted by fish checkers among the first 60 boats checked.
Winchester Bay was the most successful salmon fishing port on the South Coast on Saturday. This may be partly due to the fact that there are still a few spring Chinook entering the river. Until the fall Chinook move within range, Winchester Bay will most likely continue to offer the South Coast’s best salmon fishing. Even after that, it usually dominates the early season ocean Chinook catch.

Fishing
Springer Chinook fishing on the Rogue River has been excellent. The number of clipped fish in the lower river has been running about 3-to-1 clipped fish to non-clipped. An Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife proposal could allow the retention of non-clipped springers starting June 1.
Springer fishing on the Umpqua River has also been good. The number of clipped fish has been high, and the size of many fish has been 40-plus pounds. Water levels have stabilized, which should mean many fresh Chinook.
The Umpqua also is reporting some very good catches of shad. I haven’t had any reports of shad on the Coquille, but traditionally we fish shad between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.
Local lakes still are producing great trout fishing and the warmer weather has black bass biting more aggressively.

Fishing
Spring Chinook fishing on both the Rogue and Umpqua rivers is in full swing. The lower Rogue River near Elephant Rock seems to be producing the best fishing. On the Umpqua River, the numbers are better around Sawyer Rapids and upriver. I had a confirmed report of another 50-pound springer being caught near Elkton. The Umpqua may have fewer fish, but there seems to be some giants available.
With the recent warm weather, all local lakes are producing very good trout fishing with both legal-sized and trophy trout in the limits.
Tenmile Lakes are having very successful trout fishing, but some of the effort has now shifted to largemouth bass as the water temperatures have warmed.

GRANTS PASS (AP) — The Obama administration is asking a federal judge to let it stop spilling water over four Snake River dams this May and rely instead on barges to carry young salmon and steelhead downstream on their spring migration.
The NOAA Fisheries Service proposal filed in U.S. District Court in Portland argues that the science shows this is the best course for fish in low-water years like this one.
Salmon advocates counter that spilling water over the dams — rather than running it through power-generating turbines — has the proven track record.
