Cheers & Jeers Blog A win for Oregon
Love the health care bill or hate it — your choice. But cheers to Rep. Peter DeFazio for a timely application of political leverage. In exchange for his “yes” vote, Oregon will see fairer Medicare reimbursement.

Cheers & Jeers Blog Don’t be taken in

Jeers for gullibility. If you get mail offering lower property taxes for a fee, ask: “Why should I pay strangers to deal with county officials who work for me?” Answer: You shouldn’t. It’s a cruel scam.

Cheers & Jeers Blog A room of your own

Cheers for the Bob and Ed Room. A classroom at SOCC’s Brookings campus will honor the late Bob Sutton and Ed Freeman, after Freeman Marine Equipment Inc. donated in their names. You can name a room, too — just $15K. It’s a clever fundraising tool.

Cheers & Jeers Blog Remember Portnoy?
Jeers to us, for missing the joke in George Case’s letter on Wednesday. Case wrote about fog horns, under the title, “Port Noise Complaint.” (Go ahead, read that out loud.) We rewrote the headline and spoiled his fun. Sorry, George!

Cheers & Jeers Blog Friendly felines
Cheers — or maybe roars would be more appropriate — for visiting Lions. A district convention will bring a bunch of them to the area this weekend. They’re known for countless worthy projects. Welcome, you cool cats.

Cheers & Jeers Blog Keep petitions clean
Cheers for a court ruling that lets Oregon keep its initiative process honest. State law says convicted forgers and identity thieves can’t be paid petitioners. A federal judge agreed those sensible rules don’t damage constitutional rights.

Cheers & Jeers Blog A sad farewell
Tearful cheers and a solemn salute to Pfc. Erin McLyman, 2001 graduate of Eugene’s Sheldon High School. McLyman was a drug-abusing teen who turned her life around — and then gave it for her country in Iraq. Godspeed, soldier.

Cheers & Jeers Blog Avast, ye swabs
“All I ask,” wrote John Masefield, “is a tall ship and a star to steer her by.” Most of us have more complicated needs nowadays, but the sight of a tall ship still stirs the soul. Ahoy to the Hawaiian Chieftain, visiting Coos Bay this weekend.

Cheers & Jeers Blog Zoey is safe, hurrah!

Cheers to Robert and Peggy Crump and Don Hodges, who found 4-year-old Zoey Dorsey near Brookings. And cheers to the many others who joined the search. Selfless neighbors turned a potential tragedy into a happy reunion.

Knock off the yapping
Police say most drivers are abiding by Oregon’s new cell phone law. Most, but not all. Jeers to you if you’re in the dangerous minority. Just drive. Or just talk. Not both at once.

Cheers & Jeers Blog Kindness to animals

Civilization owes much to good-hearted people who labor without material reward. Three canine cheers for Shawn Gayhart, Coos County Animal Shelter’s Volunteer of the Decade. Woof! Woof! Woof!

Beastly behavior
Speaking of dogs, jeers to people who find pleasure in the pain of innocent beasts. An Alsea drug raid this week turned up 15 pit bulls, dogfighting paraphernalia and the buried corpses of more dogs. Scum.

Cheers & Jeers Blog Good news, bad news
Few news items are wholly good, or wholly bad. After quakes in Chile destroyed plywood plants, Roseburg Forest Products added 23 jobs in Coquille to help fill the gap. Cheers for the local jobs, but tears for Chile.

Cheers & Jeers Blog We’re gaining altitude
Little by little, air service is improving in North Bend. We’re up to three daily round trips to San Francisco, and two to Portland. Cheers to SkyWest Airlines and airport leaders, for persistence and steadfast faith.

Cheers & Jeers Blog The Magnificent 13
Maybe it’s the hope of a job that pays more than $60,000 year. Maybe it’s just troubled times and would-be politicians hoping to bring solutions. Either way, cheers to Coos County’s 13 commission candidates.

Cheers & Jeers Blog Little Shop of Wares
They’re open. Cheers for the South Coast Hospice Thrift Store and its fast-thinking staff, for their temporary roof fix. They’ll need the community’s help for permanent repairs, but at least this keeps customers coming in the door.

Cheers & Jeers Blog The Recite Stuff
Simply mentioning God in public doesn’t hurt anyone’s rights. Cheers to the 9th Circuit Court of appeals for a common-sense decision to tolerate God’s name on money and in the Pledge of Allegiance. Atheists won’t suffer unduly.

Cheers & Jeers Blog Tour of Duty
Cheers for public-spirited people who volunteer for thankless community jobs. Specifically, cheers for Marjorie Kellison and Rudy Sherych, new city councilors in Lakeside, where city government is a contact sport.

Cheers & Jeers Blog All This Jazz
Cheers for clambaking all weekend long, as musicians amateur and pro jam day and night. Don’t know how to dance? Don’t worry. Someone will teach you.

Cheers & Jeers Blog Bittersweet Charity
Cheers for the Myrtle Point kids who raised $1,500 for charity. Their success obligated teacher Melissa Drechsel to sacrifice 12 inches of blond tresses. The hair will grow back, but the lesson about generosity will stay with her fourth-graders for life.

Cheers & Jeers Blog The Flighty Ducks
Why can’t blue-chip athletes manage to keep their noses clean? If you were on track to be a millionaire superstar, wouldn’t you be careful not to throw it away? Jeers.

Cheers & Jeers Blog A ducky decision
Cheers to Disney for creating a duck-sized legal loophole. The University of Oregon’s duck is a licensed clone of Disney’s Donald, but a new deal exempts the costumed mascot. UO backers can use the feisty fowl in future rap videos.

Cheers & Jeers Blog Do fence him out
Cheers to Coos Bay school officials for taking speedy action to fence out Blossom Gulch Elementary School’s neighborhood sex offender. Camped in nearby woods, he makes parents understandably nervous. The fence will help.

Cheers & Jeers Blog Political thuggery
Can the Republican Party tolerate elected officials who think for themselves? Apparently not in Oregon. Jeers to GOP Chairman Bob Tiernan, for trying to punish two lawmakers who backed this year’s tax increases.

Cheers & Jeers Blog It’s still wonderful
C&J wasn’t around in 1959, so belated cheers to teenager Barbara Sutter, for her winning license plate slogan, “Pacific Wonderland.” In 2010, Barbara is a retired Coos Bay teacher. She goes by Bobbie Markham these days, but her slogan is still a winner.

Cheers & Jeers BlogGone Pure Silly
Jeers to anyone who still puts trust in GPS devices, after the latest scary story about naive mountain drivers. A Coos Bay couple learned a hard lesson this week in the Cascades. Overreliance on technology can leave you stranded — or worse, dead.

Cheers & Jeers Blog Kept it local
Cheers for riding the wild river and continued local ownership of Gold Beach’s Jerry’s Rogue Jets and Rogue Mail Boats. It’s all one company now, but the mail delivery and tourism tradition is still roaring strong.

Cheers & Jeers Blog MOB connections
Cheers for Music On the Bay, moving closer to paying for a covered stage in Mingus Park. MOB’s free concerts are a local treasure. A $10,000 gift from the Coquille Tribal Community Fund puts the project close to success.
