Even at $96,000 this is not a bad addition to the building costs, especially considering that many public buildings spend that much on wall decorations. This expenditure will actually pay a little back by decreasing monthly operating costs. The catch is, as some have mentioned, what are the maintenance costs of the system?

Only the cranky cooks on this website would look at this as a negative. Putting aside the question of the VC being a red-herring, solar panels ARE a good return on the investment. 16 years fly by in a blink, or are there children posting here? This is a cheers, imho.

Re:read the comments and observe that there is a real shortage of mathmetitions (and spellers) out there. Subtract grant A from total. (approx. 50-percent) Grant B is a definate maybe but probably not. Seldom do grant grantors grant dual grants to grantees. I believe there should be a law that states "ALL" government buildings be built "green" and I think this was a good idea.

16 plus years if everything works perfectly. Should be easy to keep the building heated as there shouldn't be many folks opening the doors to conduct any business.

Here again, we use Grant money for a project that the City would not do, with it's own money. Grant money is money that has come from Taxes. Yes it is available to City, Port, State, County projects etc. Without these grants the projects would not be done, because they are not Affordable. Just like the Port wasteing 10 million to clean and upgrade the tracks, for one previous Customer. How long will it take to re-coup that 10 million? I know it will create and bring more Business to the area. But this is a proven failure, as the Train system couldn't make it before. Upgrades and Maintenance are major problems. And now the Port is trying to play Real Estate Gods. Look at the Property at Kentuck Golf, will it be sold, who knows. You look at other lands that go for Wetlands, they put a Hole in the Dykes, and let the saltwater, tidewater flow in and kill the grass and enviornmental natural vegatation. Why not put a overflow pipe from the property and let the freshwater flow into the Bay, thus making it animal friendly and the vegatation will grow, instead of being killed by the Salt tidewater. We are spending Millions of Dollars, that we normally wouldn't, just because it's there and available. These Tax Dollars are Paid by the People, Not just to Waste. We need New Leadership that wants to manage OUR money, not just spend it, because they can...... Can the average homeowner afford Solar, NO, but our City Engineer want to show you the City can, by wasted tax dollars.

Yet another crazy expense by the PTB's of Coos Bay. 97,000 spent at a time that economy is in the dumps people are unemployed the business outlook is grim. But on the upside we save a little over 100 a month. Way to go!

Here's how it should have been done. Build the building and prep it for solar. by that I mean make sure there is room for the inside equipment the appropriate wiring etc and even maybe the mounts.

Then when things are looking up try and get those going.

Yet another stupid example of our elected officials wasting money. This building is a shining example of what is driving this county to the verge of bankruptcy.

How many people actually come into the visitors center a day, 10-20 tops. And phone calls. A small building and a couple of people to answer phone calls and we could have saved over a million dollars.

That million could be used to help either build up local business or attract new business or increase tourism.

but the visitors center is a red herring the only use is to make those that work there happy.

Coos Bay decision makers, you are the weak link
