Why aren’t there gates on Bear Camp Road?

Question: I want to know why gates have not been put on the Bear Camp Road through the Coast Range? Signs are not adequate. Locked gates and a sign on them stating “Due to deep snow, closed for the winter” is a lifesaver. I hope we haven’t forgotten about James Kim, and he isn’t the only one that has died on that road. Beautiful in the summer, but a death trap in the winter.

Which batteries can be tossed vs. recycled?

Question: I’d like to know if there is any place in the Bay Area or Coos County for a person to recycle dead household batteries. With the concern expressed about pollution from heavy metals, it would seem likely that used batteries should be recyclable within the county. With all the kids’ toys, digital cameras, and other portable devices now requiring nicad, lithium, alkaline, or rechargeable batteries, dumping them in the landfill seems like a poor option. Where do I take them for proper disposal?

What’s going on near Bastendorff Beach?

Question: At the northeast end of Bastendorff Beach Park are some large mounds covered with tarps.  It looks like it’s on the tribal land below the cliff.  We saw surveyors there a few weeks ago. Is this some contaminated soil? It’s roped off with the yellow crime scene tape.
