Photographing the youth is always fun. They are generally active and are less reserved in front of the camera. I find they are great at forgetting I’m there and just do their thing. The trick to photographing active kids is anticipating what they are going to do. Fortunately, their spunk allows them to repeat actions over and over until they pass out. Repetition gives you a chance to find the best angle to capture the action. As with any image, you want to break away from taking pictures standing straight up. As a general rule, take pictures below 4 ft and above 6ft. Getting low and shooting up at children makes them seem a little larger than life—a perspective they normally have of their surrounding world. Be astute to the subtle body language that can make a good image better. So be ready with a shutter speed of at least 500th of a second to freeze the action.
