Dog ‘hitches ride’ in NM, meets owner in Louisiana

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

That’s just amazing!   It just goes to show how much people love animals and why it’s so important to have contact information on collars or implanted in chips.  Good dog, Charlie!

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The dogs in New Orleans’ Carnival pet parade included a pooch that hitched a ride 1,200 miles from Taos, New Mexico, to the city where his 26-year-old master had hitchhiked weeks earlier. Stephan Soleas came to New Orleans for a few weeks of visits and music. He said his 6-year-old Labrador mix, Charlie, went missing days after he left.

Charlie was found by a couple vacationing in Taos. The couple saw a collarless dog and tried to find its owner, but the veterinarian didn’t have a microchip scanner.

The couple gave up their airline tickets, rented a car and made the 3-day drive back to New Orleans with the dog. Incidentally, they also named the dog Charlie.

Soleas and Charlie were reunited 10 days later – Feb. 5 – when Magazine Street Animal Clinic co-owner Teresa Gernon checked a microchip in the white dog’s neck. Two days later, they were in the Krewe of Barkus pet parade.

Cat finds way home after 11 days, 2 broken legs

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

That’s a seriously awesome cat!   Goes to show that nine lives can actually mean something to a cat!  I am glad for her owner.

SPRING HILL, Fla. (AP) — Down two legs, and who knows how many lives, a Florida cat missing 11 days somehow arrived home. Tracie Steger lost hope after search parties and fliers failed to turn up her beloved Giggle-Blizzard. She winced after hearing a car had hit a kitty, and raced to scare off a vulture with a suspicious whisker in its teeth.

Neither was him.

But on Thanksgiving night, a yelp from the porch was.

A car had smashed his back legs a week ago, but Giggle-Blizzard somehow got back. He knew the area from walking unleashed with Steger’s seven other cats and two dogs.

After two operations he’s back in Steger’s menagerie, sporting Christmas-colored splints.

It cost $3,000, but Steger can’t contain her joy.

6 Wallabies, a crop and Cpt. Kangaroo and Presto

SYDNEY (AP) — Wallabies snacking in Tasmania’s legally grown opium poppy fields are getting “high as a kite” and hopping around in circles, trampling the crops, a state official said.

Tasmania Attorney-General Lara Giddings told a budget hearing Wednesday that she had recently read about the kangaroo-like marsupials’ antics in a brief on the state’s large poppy industry. Tasmania is the world’s largest producer of legally grown opium for the pharmaceutical market.

“We have a problem with wallabies entering poppy fields, getting as high as a kite and going around in circles,” The Mercury newspaper quoted Giddings as telling the hearing. “Then they crash. We see crop circles in the poppy industry from wallabies that are high.”

Earl Fritz won the top prize of $777,777 in the instant game Super Lucky 7′s. That dwarfed the $1,000 he won a week earlier in a different game. The carpenter said he felt lucky a week ago and now feels a little bit luckier.

Fritz said he didn’t realize he had won the big prize at first because he wasn’t wearing his glasses.

The first win came in the instant game Extreme Green.

Fritz and his wife have not decided what to do with the money.
