Osprey’s fumble cuts power to thousands

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Hmmm what to do today?  I could go fishing, maybe some nest building or I could take this big branch right here and drop it over the power lines and watch the humans scamper about trying to fix it.  Another good day in the life of an Osprey.

BRUNSWICK, Maine (AP) — A Maine utility official says an osprey dropped a branch destined for its nest onto a power line, cutting power to about 6,000 customers.

Central Maine Power spokesman Gail Rice says it took workers about 90 minutes to restore power Wednesday in the Brunswick area.

The slippery-taloned osprey was one of a pair that has caused problems for years.

Utility workers have been doing battle with the birds of prey near a shipyard in Bath. After the birds migrate south, workers clear their nest from the transmission pole, but the ospreys keep coming back.

Rice says the utility sometimes tries to keep birds away from sensitive equipment by building nesting platforms nearby.

Man robs Ore. bank, steals car containing 2 dogs

Friday, April 9th, 2010

He probably wrecked because the chi-hua-hua’s started yapping at him and all he could think about was getting out and away from the little yappers.  The good news, no animal was injured during the enactment of this crime.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Police say a man robbed a north Portland Bank of America branch on Wednesday, then stole a Jaguar with two Chihuahuas inside.

He crashed the car a short time later in a fast-food restaurant lot and fled on foot.

The car and dogs belonged to Melanie Davis, who was in the bank during the holdup. She tells The Oregonian the man burst into the bank shouting profanity, said it was a robbery and threatened to shoot those inside if they didn’t cooperate.

After grabbing the money, he demanded Davis’ car keys.

The dogs were recovered unharmed.

Police spokeswoman Detective Mary Wheat says Portland police and the FBI are looking for the robber.

Bank wrongly repossessed home, took bird

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

She must have a nice bird, had a contractor come in and tried to take the parrot I had, he’d have bitten chunks out of him!  As for wrongful repossesion it’ll be interesting to hear how that happened if it did?

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A Pittsburgh-area woman is suing Bank of America, claiming it wrongfully repossessed her home and saying that a bank contractor trashed the house and took her parrot.

Forty-six-year-old Angela Iannelli sued Bank of America in Allegheny County on Monday. She claims her mortgage payments were on time when the contractor damaged furniture, took her pet parrot and padlocked the door to her Allison Park home in October.

Bank of America declined to comment. The suit seeks unspecified damages.

Iannelli’s attorney says she suffered irreparable emotional damage and is afraid to set foot in the house. The lawsuit says she eventually regained possession of the bird, named Luke, after repeated phone calls to the bank.

‘Chicken-playing’ chicken lives with horse, dragon

Friday, February 5th, 2010

Alas the mighty chicken was caught and saved from death on the bumper of a car!   Good things come to those who get caught in fishing nets I guess.

GLENDALE, Calif. (AP) — A black chicken who spent two months dodging cars, coyotes and captors at a busy Glendale intersection is a sitting duck no more. Berna Arnold and her 8-year-old son said they used fishing nets to catch the elusive hen and move her to their Simi Valley home, where she is living with a horse, a bearded dragon, lizards and three other chickens.

Pasadena Humane Society animal control officers tried at least seven times in the last two months to catch the bird, which they considered a traffic hazard. A spokeswoman said the hen always flew into the trees or ran into traffic and officers would have to back off.

Witnesses named the bird Lucky.
