Northern Calif. woman says family’s Chihuahua died protecting her kids from pit bull invaders

RICHMOND, Calif. (AP) — A Northern California woman says her Chihuahua died protecting her children from two pit bulls that got into her apartment.

Mayda Estrella, of Richmond, says the family’s Chihuahua, named Manchas, jumped in between the canine invaders and her 4-year-old son Sunday. A pit bull grabbed Manchas with its jaws and carried the Chihuahua away.

Contra Costa County animal services officials say the Chihuahua was killed, and the pit bulls are now in custody.

The pit bulls’ owner says they had escaped their yard by chewing through a fence. Estrella says her front door was open when the dogs came in.

She says when she saw the dogs come in, she ran into a bedroom with her other child, a newborn baby.

County officials say the owner won’t face criminal charges.

Errant spike strip leaves drivers flat

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

Nothing like leaving the back door open and dropping spike strips.  Sounds like they are lucky that no one was injured by this.   Rule of thumb, CLOSE THE DOORS!

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Some drivers in Newport Beach said they were left flat after a spike strip fell out of a police car and punctured their tires. A police report said the strip, which is designed to slow down fleeing drivers, fell out of a police officer’s Chevy Tahoe on Feb. 27. The report said the officer had checked out the vehicle but forgot to close the back door before leaving the police station.

At least three motorists had several tires flattened and two have filed claims with the city.

One is asking the city for $221 to cover repairs and towing fees while another wants $870 because of two flat tires on his Jaguar.

City spokeswoman Tara Finnigan said the city is looking into those claims and can’t comment.

Police: Robber holds up 11 people, gets $6

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

There is nothing worse than holding up 11 people except maybe if you pick the 11 people that only have $6.00 on them.  Maybe when he gets out of jail he will have the skills to run a credit check on victims first.  He gets my Bozo of the month award!

THERMAL, Calif. (AP) — They say crime doesn’t pay. For one robber in California, it did – but not much. Authorities in Riverside County say a woman with a gun robbed 11 customers at a market and got away with $6.

A Sheriff’s Department statement says the woman was armed with a semi-automatic pistol when she went to La Chicanita Market in the town of Thermal on Tuesday afternoon.

Deputy Herlinda Valenzuela says the woman confronted 10 customers in the store and also demanded money from one person who was entering the market. She then fled in an old car.

Nobody was hurt.

Judge admonished after attorney paid with coupons

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Now that’s funny!   Way to go judge even if you did lose your bench!   And to think I was going to order from them just yesterday, NOT!

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A California judicial commission has admonished a retired judge for ordering that an attorney who settled a class-action lawsuit be paid in $10 coupons for women’s apparel. The lawsuit accused Windsor Fashions Inc. of invading customers’ privacy by requesting personal information during credit card transactions.

As part of the January 2009 settlement, the company issued coupons to the plaintiffs, and Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Brett Klein ordered that the attorney fee of $125,000 be paid similarly.

The Commission on Judicial Performance, which disciplines state judges, said Tuesday that Klein was biased and abusive. It also said he improperly communicated with the press by e-mailing his decision to a small newspaper.

Klein later rescinded his order to pay the attorney with coupons. He retired in November.
