insurance Fla. woman finds unclaimed $17,500 insurance checkNot a bad find! She can finally replace the car that was destroyed back in 1978.

LAUDERHILL, Fla. (AP) — An 85-year-old South Florida woman who went looking for a photo of her ex-husband says she found a $17,500 insurance claim check from 1978 instead. Barbara Cosgrove found the check, dated Jan. 23, 1978, in an unopened envelope inside a nightstand drawer at her Lauderhill home. She said she doesn’t know why she hadn’t found the check sooner and had looked inside the drawer “a thousand times” before the discovery.

Cosgrove saids the check stems from an accident that occurred under the Brooklyn Bridge in 1976. A tarp filled with rainwater fell 200 feet onto her car, damaging the vehicle.

It’s unclear if Cosgrove can claim the money from the check, which was issued by an insurance company that has been declared insolvent and liquidated.

moneyfist1 Man buys car, finds $200K in counterfeit cashBALL GROUND, Ga. (AP) — One north Georgia man got more than he bargained for when he bought a car from a towing company late last year. Officials with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday that Tye Kuykendall found $200,000 in counterfeit money inside a hidden compartment behind the back seat of the car.

Authorities said Kuykendall bought the car after it sat for more than three years in an impound yard after being towed by Fulton County police in 2006.

Authorities said he was fixing a gas leak when he discovered the secret compartment.

Cherokee officials have called the U.S. Secret Service to help with the case.

Kmart workers open tin can, find $10,000

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

And who says a Christmas present can’t come in a red tin can.  That would be a nice little gift, but I hope the person that lost it gets it back.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — When employees of a Des Moines Kmart store finally opened a red tin can that had been sitting on the customer service counter for four days, they got a $10,000 surprise. The can contained $10,380 in assorted bills. Employees called police after opening the can Friday.

Police said the money was counted by a store manager, placed in envelopes according to denomination and then turned over to officers. No note was found.

The store manager declined to identify himself and referred all questions to police. Telephone and e-mail messages left Monday for a Kmart spokeswoman were not immediately returned.

The investigation into where the money came from is continuing.

Wedding ring found in dump amid 10 tons of trash

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

I have never been one to think that looking through a haystack was worth it for a needle, but if it’s diamonds the rules change.  That is pretty cool that it was found.

PARSIPPANY, N.J. (AP) — Sanitation workers sorted through 10 tons of trash to recover a wedding ring accidentally thrown away by a New Jersey couple.

Bridget Pericolo had placed the ring in a cup that her husband, Angelo, threw out with the garbage before leaving for work. When he realized the mistake, he contacted the town’s sanitation supervisor, who suggested coming by the Parsippany dump.

Supervisor Michael Brotons and sanitation workers Edgar Lopez and Joseph McGee dug through the refuse until they found the garbage bag that Angelo Pericolo had thrown away.

The Pericolos recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary.
