insurance Fla. woman finds unclaimed $17,500 insurance checkNot a bad find! She can finally replace the car that was destroyed back in 1978.

LAUDERHILL, Fla. (AP) — An 85-year-old South Florida woman who went looking for a photo of her ex-husband says she found a $17,500 insurance claim check from 1978 instead. Barbara Cosgrove found the check, dated Jan. 23, 1978, in an unopened envelope inside a nightstand drawer at her Lauderhill home. She said she doesn’t know why she hadn’t found the check sooner and had looked inside the drawer “a thousand times” before the discovery.

Cosgrove saids the check stems from an accident that occurred under the Brooklyn Bridge in 1976. A tarp filled with rainwater fell 200 feet onto her car, damaging the vehicle.

It’s unclear if Cosgrove can claim the money from the check, which was issued by an insurance company that has been declared insolvent and liquidated.

Cat finds way home after 11 days, 2 broken legs

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

That’s a seriously awesome cat!   Goes to show that nine lives can actually mean something to a cat!  I am glad for her owner.

SPRING HILL, Fla. (AP) — Down two legs, and who knows how many lives, a Florida cat missing 11 days somehow arrived home. Tracie Steger lost hope after search parties and fliers failed to turn up her beloved Giggle-Blizzard. She winced after hearing a car had hit a kitty, and raced to scare off a vulture with a suspicious whisker in its teeth.

Neither was him.

But on Thanksgiving night, a yelp from the porch was.

A car had smashed his back legs a week ago, but Giggle-Blizzard somehow got back. He knew the area from walking unleashed with Steger’s seven other cats and two dogs.

After two operations he’s back in Steger’s menagerie, sporting Christmas-colored splints.

It cost $3,000, but Steger can’t contain her joy.

Wedding ring found in dump amid 10 tons of trash

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

I have never been one to think that looking through a haystack was worth it for a needle, but if it’s diamonds the rules change.  That is pretty cool that it was found.

PARSIPPANY, N.J. (AP) — Sanitation workers sorted through 10 tons of trash to recover a wedding ring accidentally thrown away by a New Jersey couple.

Bridget Pericolo had placed the ring in a cup that her husband, Angelo, threw out with the garbage before leaving for work. When he realized the mistake, he contacted the town’s sanitation supervisor, who suggested coming by the Parsippany dump.

Supervisor Michael Brotons and sanitation workers Edgar Lopez and Joseph McGee dug through the refuse until they found the garbage bag that Angelo Pericolo had thrown away.

The Pericolos recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary.
