‘Zombies’ invade during morning rush-hour

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

NEW YORK (AP) — As if the morning commute wasn’t odd enough, intrepid New Yorkers trying to make their way to work on Tuesday had to battle past hordes of the walking dead. Two dozen zombies, their clothes spattered with fake blood, were staggering up and down the block outside Madison Square Garden. Downtown, others shuffled across the Brooklyn Bridge.

Some pedestrians looked startled or amused by the ghost-white actors with bruised-looking eyes. Some people ignored them entirely. Others whipped out their cell phone cameras.

Horror movie fan Linda Emery was thrilled to see the creatures.

“I’m into zombies, anything with zombies,” said the 58-year-old home care provider from Brooklyn. It made a change from her usual commute.

“You see a lot of stuff, but not this stuff,” she said.

Erik Machado, an audio engineer heading to work in New Jersey, was unfazed and passed by the scene with nary a glance at the nightmares walking around.

“Gotta commute, gotta go where I gotta go,” the Queens resident said.

The stunt was part of a campaign in 26 cities worldwide promoting the Halloween premiere of the AMC television series “The Walking Dead.” The show is being broadcast outside of the United States on Fox International Channels.

At one point, about 15 zombies crawled on the roof, hood and trunk of a parked, off-duty taxi.

Taxi driver David Pollack managed to escape from the horde, scrambling out of the back seat, playing along with the drama of it all.

“I think I’m going to be walking over the George Washington Bridge and heading over to Jersey, hopefully they haven’t gotten there yet,” he said.

He added, “I’m a tough New Yorker, but I don’t mess with zombies.”

Saggy pants foolish but legal, judge rules

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

NYC judge rules that wearing low-slung trousers may look foolish but is not a crime.

NEW YORK (AP) — Wearing saggy pants is not a crime, just foolish.

That’s how a New York City judge ruled in throwing out a summons issued to a man wearing low-slung pants that exposed his underwear.

Judge Ruben Franco said that the summons appeared to be an attempt by one police officer to show his displeasure with the style.

The Bronx man, Julio Martinez, was issued the ticket on April 20.

The judge writes that many may find the low-slung trouser trend distasteful and foolish. But he says people can dress how they want as long as they do not offend public order and decency.

Franco’s decision was issued last month. Martinez and his Legal Aid attorney could not be reached for comment.

Police in western New York find two men drunk and naked in the woods after church festival

LEWISTON, N.Y. (AP) — Police in western New York said two Canadian men attended a church festival and wound up in the woods drunk, naked and covered in mud. State police said troopers found a 22-year-old man from Hamilton, Ontario sitting along a road in the town of Lewiston, just outside Niagara Falls, around 5:45 a.m. Sunday.

Troopers said he was caked in mud. After questioning him, troopers found a 23-year-old man from Hamilton covered in mud and passed out in a ditch nearby.

Police said both men were highly intoxicated.

Troopers say the men had attended the St. John de LaSalle Carnival on Saturday and afterward decided to make it a “Woodstock event” by dancing naked in the woods. Both men were taken to a local hospital where they were treated and released.

Neither man was charged.

Couple weds in shark tank, wearing wet suits

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

That’s cool and probably a lot cheaper than just a dress would be for a regular wedding.  If they can face sharks, marriage should be easy enough LOL

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) — A New York couple has taken the plunge inside a shark tank.

April Pignataro and Michael Curry were lowered in a steel cage into the tank to exchange their wedding vows at Atlantis Marine World in Riverhead, N.Y, on Sunday.

She wore a white wet suit; he wore a black one.

The experienced divers spoke their vows into radio headgear transmitted to a minister outside the tank. About 75 guests watched from behind glass.

The tank is part of the Lost City of Atlantis shark exhibit.
