PA steelworkers work Super Bowl Sunday

Friday, February 4th, 2011

CLAIRTON, Pa. (AP) — It’s only natural that Pittsburgh-area steelworkers would want to watch the Pittsburgh Steelers in Sunday’s Super Bowl.

But a U.S. Steel memo says workers in the Clairton, Irvin and Edgar Thomson mills who miss work Sunday or Monday “without just cause” will face “severe disciplinary action.”

Woman rescued when truck flies off road, lands in tree 30 feet above ground, will be cited

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

EVANS CITY, Pa. (AP) — Rescue crews had to use ropes and ladders to retrieve a western Pennsylvania woman from her pickup truck after it ran off a road and landed in tree tops about 30 feet above ground in a ravine.

Police say they’ll be citing 33-year-old Dana Bowser for driving too fast for conditions on Route 68 near Evans City. That’s about 25 miles north of Pittsburgh.

State police say Bowser lost control near a culvert that carries the highway over Connoquenessing (kaw-nuh-kwah-NESS’-ing) Creek. Police say Bowser told them the road was icy.

Rescue workers say Bowser was conscious and able to communicate with workers. Most importantly, they say she didn’t panic as they worked to reach her in the precarious position.

She was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.

Lottery pays $7.77 million after 7-7-7-7 hits

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

I wonder how many of these players actively search for 4 leaf clovers too?   I think they’ve probably done okay playing these numbers.  If it was once a week and they bet $1 that would be $52 a year.  It’s been 30 years since it hit so had you played all along you would have payed $1,560 and won $5,000.   Way to go lucky pickers!

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Pennsylvania Lottery proved to be seventh heaven for thousands of lottery players this week.

The lottery paid out a total of $7.77 million after the number 7-7-7-7 came up in the Big 4 drawing Wednesday. More than 3,100 tickets had the winning numbers. They won either $2,500 or $5,000, depending on whether the buyer wagered 50 cents or $1.

That set of numbers has only been a winner twice since 1980. The last set of quadruple numbers to win was 2-2-2-2 in September 2008.

Police: Drunk man tried to revive dead opossum

Friday, March 26th, 2010

So there’s love for animals and then there’s love for animals.  I think this takes the cake though.  My first impression is, what the heck would happen if it worked.  A possum is basically a grizzly bear on steriods with an attitude and a smaller frame.  If it came to with you giving mouth to mouth I’d guess it’d rip you to shreds BEFORE you could get away.  There could be a darwin in this one.

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. (AP) — Police say they charged a Pennsylvania man with public drunkenness after he was seen trying to resuscitate a long-dead opossum along a highway.

State police Trooper Jamie Levier says several witnesses saw 55-year-old Donald Wolfe, of Brookville, near the animal Thursday along Route 36 in Oliver Township, about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

The trooper says one person saw Wolfe kneeling before the animal and gesturing as though he were conducting a seance. He says another saw Wolfe attempting to give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

Levier says the animal already had been dead a while.

The Associated Press could not locate a home telephone number for Wolfe.
