Boy’s science project prompts school evacuation

Monday, January 18th, 2010

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Fire officials said a San Diego middle school was evacuated when a student’s science project was mistaken for a bomb. Fire-Rescue spokesman Maurice Luque said a vice principal’s concerns prompted the evacuation of Millennial Tech Magnet Middle School Friday afternoon. Luque said an arson team took photos and x-rays of the empty plastic bottle with wires and determined it was harmless.

Luque says the 11-year-old boy was trying to build a motion detector from instructions he found on the Internet and parts he bought online with help from his father. His parents did not realize that the object looked threatening.

He said the student was “a genius-type kid” who undertook the project on his own, had no intentions of hurting anyone or causing any disruptions.

Man throws feces in courtroom and gets 31 years

I guess if you are facing a long prison sentence why not do whatever you can to make it worse.  I am sure this will help to influence jury and judge alike to give you light sentencing.  I am guessing he has not read “How to win friends and influence people”

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A man who sneaked a bag of his feces into a San Diego courtroom during his home-invasion robbery trial, smeared it on his lawyer and threw it at jurors has been sentenced to 31 years in prison.

Superior Court Judge Frank Brown on Monday sentenced Weusi McGowan for robbery, burglary and two assault charges stemming from the feces-flinging incident during his January trial.

McGowan, who attorneys say suffers from mental illness, had asked for a mistrial because he believed jurors had seen him in restraints when he entered the courtroom.

Several days after his request was denied, McGowan pulled out a bag of excrement he had hidden in his clothing, rubbed it on his lawyer and tossed it at the jury, hitting one juror’s computer case.
