W.Va. Lottery player wins 9th big lottery prize

Friday, July 10th, 2009

I think I have probably played about 2,000 scratch offs in my lifetime and the most I have won is $156.00.  I think I need a new lucky penny as mine is keeping me poor.

This week, the 60-year-old South Charleston woman claimed her ninth West Virginia Lottery prize, $7,000 in the Gem 7s instant game. That brings her total winnings since last September to $159,000 from five instant tickets.

Lottery officials said Friday that Bailey has claimed a total $165,800 in prizes from instant and online games since 2000.

She’s not the only lucky one in the family. Her husband Richard claimed a $6,000 instant game prize in January and a $10,000 prize last September.

Chestnut of San Jose, Calif., hoisted the American flag and then stood proudly like an Olympic athlete as “The Star-Spangled Banner” played following his 68 to 64 1/2 dog victory over his archrival, six-time titleholder Takeru Kobayashi.

As soon as he knew he had won, he shot his right fist into the air, his mouth still bulging while he chewed the last of his wieners at Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest.

“This is great,” Chestnut told ESPN, which broadcast the 10-minute contest live. “After the second minute, I knew that my body was cooperating and it was going to be hard to beat me.”

PETALUMA, Calif. (AP) — A prominent under-bite, scrunched face and floppy ears are the hallmarks of a winner.

The winner of the World’s Ugliest Dog contest, that is.

Pabst, a boxer-mix rescued from a shelter by Miles Egstad of Citrus Heights, Calif., won the annual contest on Friday at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Northern California.

It was an upset victory for Pabst, who beat former champion Rascal, a pedigree Chinese Crested.

Pabst’s owner took home $1,600 in prize money, pet supplies and a modeling contract with House of Dog.

Miss Ellie, a blind 15-year-old Chinese Crested Hairless, won the pedigree category.

Earl Fritz won the top prize of $777,777 in the instant game Super Lucky 7′s. That dwarfed the $1,000 he won a week earlier in a different game. The carpenter said he felt lucky a week ago and now feels a little bit luckier.

Fritz said he didn’t realize he had won the big prize at first because he wasn’t wearing his glasses.

The first win came in the instant game Extreme Green.

Fritz and his wife have not decided what to do with the money.
